Driver crashes into Castro's Fitness SF, Weaver's Coffee building … – Hoodline

Posted on April 6, 2023

Early this morning, the driver of a vehicle crashed through the window of the Fitness SF and Weaver’s Coffee & Tea building at 2301 Market St. (and Noe).
According to SFPD spokesperson Tiffany Hang, Mission Station officers responded to the vehicle collision at approximately 1:55 a.m.
Hang said there were no injuries as a result of the collision. She referred a reporter to the California Highway Patrol for more details on the driver and the cause of the crash. The CHP did not respond by press time.
Fitness SF and Weaver’s — both of which have been temporarily closed due to the pandemic — also did not respond to an inquiry on the extent of the damage.
A resident of the Icon Building, located directly across the street from Fitness SF, shared home surveillance video of the incident with Hoodline.
In the video, the driver can be seen going full speed in the wrong traffic lane on Market, then up onto the sidewalk. After smashing through the windows of Weaver’s Coffee, the vehicle then comes to a stop.
A SFPD squad car can be seen traveling southbound on Noe Street, where it briefly stops before continuing on.
With San Francisco gyms allowed to reopen at limited capacity on Monday, it’s unclear if the damage to the building will inhibit Fitness SF from doing so. Weaver’s Coffee, which had previously been open for takeout, closed temporarily last month, with no reopening date set.
We’ll update this story as we receive more information.
Update, 2:55 p.m.: Blake Smith, the manager of Fitness SF’s Castro location, said it will be reopening at limited capacity on Monday. The gym did not sustain any damage, and a city building inspector has officially confirmed the safety of its space.
Update, September 14 12:00 p.m.:
CHP spokesperson Mark Andrews tells Hoodline that CHP handled the arrest of the suspect and SFPD handled the collision.
Andrews tells Hoodline CHP attempted a traffic stop of the vehicle at approximately 1:50 a.m. along US 101 North before the Mission/Duboce exit for speeding
The vehicle failed to yield to CHP and a pursuit was initiated. Once the vehicle exited the freeway it began driving recklessly on the wrong side of the road and running red lights.
CHP then discontinued its pursuit. Two minutes later the vehicle was observed having crashed into 2301 Market St.
Andrews says the driver had fled the scene and was arrested nearby. Andrew was unable to provide any more details about the driver at the time.
Many Hoodline commenters have questioned why the patrol car continued past the incident after stopping briefly. SFPD spokesperson Tiffany Hung confirmed the patrol car was not an SFPD vehicle. However it was a CHP vehicle in pursuit of the driver.
Update, 8pm:
CHP spokesperson Mark Andrews informed Hoodline the driver was 26 year-old Eric Mosness from San Francisco.
Andrews tells Hoodline homeless individuals along Noe St. flagged down the CHP vehicle and pointed in the direction Mosness had fled.
Mosness was then arrested for felony evading an officer, hit and run, driving without a license, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of unlawful drug paraphernalia. Mosness also had an outstanding felony warrant in San Francisco.
Public records indicate Mosness was booked on September 11 at 12:05 p.m and is currently being held at County Jail 2 (425 7th St.).
Mosness next court date is scheduled for Tuesday September 15 at 9:00 a.m.
The Wooden Nickel, the women-owned bar that moved into the former Truck space at 15th and Folsom streets seven years ago, has permanently closed.
After eight years in the Castro, Mexican restaurant Tacorgasmico (2337 Market St.) has called it quits. The restaurant quietly closed last weekend.
On Monday, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors' Land Use Committee delayed its vote for two weeks on updating the landmark status of the historic Castro Theatre (429 Castro St).
On Monday, San Francisco drag icon, club owner, and LGBTQ community leader Heklina passed away unexpectedly.
