MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WV News) — The first family fitness night at Eastwood Elementary School was deemed a success.
The goal was to encourage families and students to get moving during the winter months, said Mary Beth Selby, first-grade teacher and wellness organizer.
“It’s been fantastic,” she said Thursday night.
Professional fitness instructors from the community donated their time, and local businesses donated healthy food options. Alex Fox taught yoga, Elliot Law of Life Hoops led a gym workout with active stretching, and Micki Pauley of Warrior Body showed how to use medicine balls to get a good workout.
Buffalo Wild Wings and Taziki’s both donated food such as grilled chicken, salad, grilled veggies and grilled chicken wraps. Kroger donated water, and Smoothie King donated smoothies. There also were healthy snacks such as popcorn and string cheese.
“These are places that our families would go and eat out in the community,” Selby said. “And we’re showing them healthy options that they can make when they go to those places.”
The outside isn’t as accessible to kids during the winter months, Selby said. It’s not always possible to play outside on the playground so the event was to show families ways to keep their kids moving, making friends and having social interaction during wintertime.
“Our school motto is growing healthy kids in a healthy world,” Selby said. “And we kind of want to show them and lead by example in how to do that.”
It takes a village to raise and educate kids, she said, but COVID-19 isolated schools, but the community is able to come back into the schools now.
“It was really incredible to see that the community stepped up to the plate and they are willing to help in any way,” Selby said. “We just have to ask.”
Pauley said she was more than happy to come show kids how just one piece of equipment – a medicine ball – can be used in all kinds of ways.
“You can slam it, you can carry it, you can toss it, you can have a partner and pass it to each other,” Pauley said. “All kinds of things you can do.”
Amy Flynn, parent of Ian and Landon, said it was a fun evening.
“It was an opportunity to get our family together and honestly work out,” Flynn said. “I broke a sweat.”
Donna Talerico, deputy superintendent of Monongalia County Schools, stopped by and said events like Thursday’s showed what Eastwood was about.
“It’s the heart of who they are. And it’s about developing students that are going to be successful citizens, and that is all about good nutrition, good health habits, activity – it’s part of the learning process,” Talerico said. “If you have those skills, then the learning process itself becomes much easier and much more fun.”
