New Delhi: The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has issued a draft notification that has made the display of the validity of fitness certificates and registration marks on vehicles mandatory. The MoRTH, in a notification, said that vehicles will have to display the information in yellow colour on blue background in type Arial bold script. This is apparently being done to make sure that authorities are aware of the years a vehicle has spent on roads. This is important as it is well known that old vehicles generally emit more pollution when compared to new ones.
The development comes close on the heels of the Central Motor Vehicles (23rd Amendment) Rules, 2021 coming into force. The rules, which will come into force with effect from April 1, 2022, will require owners to shell out eight times more money in order to get the registration renewed if the vehicle owned is more than 15 years old. The new rules are part of the Centre’s initiative to phase out old vehicles.
