Businessman Ben Marciano has announced his intention to run for mayor of Ocala.
Marciano, who filed his paperwork earlier this week, made his intention known through a press release on Friday.
Speaking briefly to the Star-Banner, Marciano said his platform is focused on public safety, physical and mental health, and strategic growth.

With public safety, Marciano said he wants to make sure that police officers have the resources they need to do their jobs. For physical and mental health, Marciano said he wants to take a hard look on those areas that are affecting the community. And for strategic growth, Marciano said the community is rapidly expanding and he wants to make sure the city is prepared.
Marciano said with his business background and community involvement, he feels he can make a difference.
“I want to be a mayor to serve all of the community and be there for everyone. My desire is to help the community,” said Marciano, owner of Zone Health & Fitness, with two locations in Ocala. The business employs 100 people.
The news release states Marciano has served the community for 20 years, is a board member at many organizations, and has received awards for his contributions to the community.
Marciano is married and has three children. His campaign has created a website at www.BenMarcianoforOcalaMayor.com.
Present Mayor Kent Guinn said he had no comment on Marciano’s running for the job.
Last year, Guinn easily won re-election when he defeated Manal Fakhoury. This is his sixth term in office, and it will end at the end of 2023. Guinn has been mayor for 11 years, and was a former council member for 12 years.
The mayor’s position is nonpartisan. Mayors serve-two year terms and earn a $550 monthly salary. Among the mayor’s duties is overseeing the Ocala Police Department.
The mayoral election, along with elections for two city council seats, will be held in 2023.
