The actor showed us how he takes on training that isn’t necessarily what you’d expect from the MCU.
JOSH SEGARRA IS on the short list of actors that have flipped from DC to Marvel, with roles in both of the comic book universes. Recently, Segarra has taken on a part that plays into his gentler side, shifting from his portrayal as the savage villain Prometheus in DC’s Arrow to Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk’s unrequited admirer, Augustus “Pug” Pugliese, in Disney+’s She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. Pug’s professional and kind-hearted demeanor is portrayed partially through his very human physique—much different then the bear-chested giants Marvel fans are used to seeing when actors take on a role in its connected universe.
“I’m rocking three-piece suits on this job,” Segarra told the MH crew. In that spirit, Segarra’s tailoring his physical training to his everyday life rather than taking any inspiration for his character’s more buttoned-up persona.
Segarra was a basketball player as a teen, and started taking training seriously when his uncle showed him how he could use his workouts to improve his game. When his priorities shifted to acting, Segarra pushed his body to perform in up to eight shows per week playing Emilio Estefan in Broadway’s On Your Feet. Now, at 36, he’s prioritizing keeping his joints healthy and keeping up with his kids.
His go-to workouts? Strength training, hot yoga, and Pilates. He focuses his lifting sessions on compound movements, working his whole body. His two weekly rest days consist of stretching and running around the neighborhood with his kids.
We caught up with Segarra for one of these full-body strength days at the Men’s Health gym.
