Not everyone has access to a fitness facility, so a fitness court is being made accessible to everyone — at no cost.
The partnering between the city of River Rouge and the National Fitness Campaign Priority Health, a nationally recognized nonprofit health plan, created what is being described as an equitable access exercise spot inside the Memorial Park neighborhood.
The park is located at 11051 W. Jefferson.
Mayor William Campbell, along with representatives from Priority Health and DTE Energy, were guest speakers at a recent ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the opening of the court.
Members of the high school’s basketball and football teams were on hand and performed challenges on the court showing off the equipment.
Robin Clark, a local fitness ambassador, gave a demonstration to the audience of all the exercises that can be performed on the court.
The goal of the partnership is to expand free access to high-quality workouts and create equitable access to exercise for communities.
The Fitness Court is designed to be an open-air wellness center that allows users to leverage their own body weight to get a complete workout.
It was created with adults, as well as youths, in mind and it is adaptable for all fitness levels.
The equipment also can be used in group or solo settings with local volunteer ambassadors leading classes for groups.
New and solo users can download the free Fitness Court App — a “coach-in-your-pocket style platform” — that transforms the outdoor gym into a digitally supported wellness ecosystem.
“At Priority Health, we believe all people have the right to a healthy life and that’s why we are committed to investing in the community to help reduce barriers to free, accessible fitness and improve wellness for the neighbors of Memorial Park,” said Praveen Thadani, president of Priority Health. “We are excited to partner with the city of River Rouge and the National Fitness Campaign to open this Priority Health Fitness Court as we continue to expand on this initiative across the state.”
