Austin BuCans enjoys a workout Aug. 2 at Col. Stephen K. Scott Fitness Center.
One of the workout gyms at Redstone Arsenal is open 24/7, but there’s a catch: preregistration.
Gaylene Wilson, recreation division chief, said thousands of patrons are preregistered to use the Col. Stephen K. Scott Fitness Center and enjoy visiting workouts before the facility opens or after it closes. But others just show up and leave unhappy when they are unable to gain access because they have not registered.
Preregistering is a matter of completing paperwork that allows access for users via their Common Access Card, military ID card, or key fob (depending on patron status), she said.
“If they don’t preregister and fill out the paperwork, their cards will not work,” Wilson said.
Use of the gym is free and having 24/7 access is especially convenient for those who want to use the gym before work, she said, adding that the most popular time outside normal operating hours is 4 to 5 a.m.
Users with all-access can also visit the gym on weekends and holidays, Wilson said.
“We have been offering 24/7 access since 2017,” she said. “However, we do want to remind users of policies implemented by our headquarters that must be adhered to for the safety and security of all.”
For example, Wilson said, some patrons want to bring their kids along during visits outside normal hours, but children under age 18 are not authorized at Scott. Unauthorized users and guests are prohibited at the gym.
It’s against the rules to leave the door open for others to gain access (no “piggy-backing”), she said.
Last, but not least, “We recommend you work out with a partner for safety reasons,” Wilson said.
Cameras monitor the facility at all times to ensure the rules are followed.
On some occasions, such as during a power, computer or system outage, those with 24/7 access may be unable to enter the facility.
“Those issues are being worked out,” Wilson said. “We apologize for the inconvenience. It’s very frustrating for our customers, but we can’t address that after hours.”
Patrons can preregister at Scott Fitness Center during normal operating hours and problems can be reported during normal business hours at either of the two gym facilities:
Col. Stephen K. Scott Fitness Center, building 4460 on Digney Road, between 5 a.m. and 1 p.m. Monday through Thursday, phone 256-876-6701.
Pagano Gym, building 3474 on Honest John Road, open Monday through Thursday from 5 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and on Friday from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m., phone 256-876-2943.
Wilson said issues may also be reported directly to Lori Ciranni, director of sports, fitness and aquatics, at 256-842-2574.
