Renick introduces first Adaptive Fitness Center in Southern WV – West Virginia Daily News

Posted on May 18, 2023

RENICK (WVDN) – The Renick Community Center has completed construction of a wheelchair accessible Adaptive Fitness Zone that is inclusive, meaning both the wheelchair users and their gym buddies can work out together.
This unique facility was made possible by The Seneca Trail Charitable Foundation in honor of Catherine Christian Hill.
This outdoor set up includes 11 stations of which five contain a wheelchair accessible position. All have signage that shows a diagram of the method of use and a QR code that a smart phone can scan for a video demonstration on the use of each unit.
Internet access password is displayed in the window of the community center and hours for using the Fitness Zone are daylight to dusk. A canopy over these weatherproof exercise machines is planned in the future. For now, the fitness zone is open air allowing users a view of the landscape as they exercise.
Accessible stations include vertical press, butterfly and reverse fly combo, chest press and lateral pull.
There is a wheelchair accessible porta potty outside as well, so even when the Community Center is not open the Fitness Zone is. Security cameras are operating for safety. Children under 14 are not allowed to use the machines.
After the State Fair ends, craft classes are set to begin again at the community center with Renee Ley.
Ley held classes prior to August and had many craft activities, some requested by attendees and some of her own interest. There is no charge for the class, other than materials cost. Local artists are encouraged to participate and do a class on their particular medium.
Additionally, the Renick Farmers Market continues on Tuesdays; the hours are now 4:30-6 p.m.
The community is encouraged to keep up with the programs at the Renick Community Center at 217 Huff Street, off Rt. 219 near the old High School Building, by checking their Facebook page for announcements and updates. Messages to the page are answered promptly.
